Theme for the Opening Reception of “Santralistanbul”and “Istanbul Diptychs” Exhibitions
2 December 2008
The theme of the menu served for the Opening of new Art Gallery and two exhibitions hosted by ICiB, is “the Fantastic Taste of Istanbul”.
Istanbul has long been a bridge between many cultures. And these diverse cultures have all added their flavours to the city’s extraordinary culinary pot. The city has also benefited from the rich lands of Anatolia – and beyond – in which almost anything can naturally grow. With four proper seasons, all manner of crops ripen beneath the bluest of skies.
Istanbul’s historical cuisine developed in the Seraglio – the palace kitchens – where the finest chefs gathered all the recipes they could find. In this ‘school’ of learning and discovery, recipes were refined to suit the court’s fastidious tastes.
Now, centuries later, the people of Istanbul still enjoy their sunny days and their delicious food. It remains central to culture and daily life. Food may be a little faster, but it is still fantastic, skilfully cooked using traditional methods, invariably fresh ingredients, moderately spiced.
Anywhere you go in the city, you will find delicious food. From kerbside kiosks and fishing boats to gastronomic restaurants that keep alive the strict traditions of the Seraglio, there are myriad unforgettable tastes.
