ISTANBUL 2010
Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture
Istanbul has been the capital of empire since 330 AD and it was only in 1923 that the seat of government was transferred to Ankara. So it is something of a return to form to find itself a capital again, this time European Capital of Culture 2010. The honour is something that it takes seriously, but not so seriously that will pass up the opportunity for a year-long party.
Istanbul is not waiting for January 2010 for the festivities to begin and is already staging a whole series of special events. Most importantly, its declaration as a European Capital of culture is providing the pretext for the city to take stock of a long history and to discuss its vision for the years ahead. “2010” has been an occasion to re-evaluate the conservation of historical properties, plan new museums and involve outlying neighbourhoods in the awareness of just how special Istanbul really is.
The Istanbul Centre in Brussels is pleased to promote European Capital Culture 2010 and interest a wider audience in the celebrations. It is a handy address for those outside Turkey wanting to become involved in the many projects being planned. And of course, ICiB is planning its own special events to mark the occasion.
